INFORMATION

What makes games better than work (despite the motivation of getting paid)?

1) Clearly defined goals

2) Better scorekeeping

3) More frequent feedback

4) A higher degree of personal choice of methods

5) Consistent coaching

  from Cooradt, C., 1984 as cited in Chou, Y (2016) p. 6.

BENEFITS

Using the principles of Human-Focused Design, as opposed to Function-Focused Design, is motivating (Chou, p. 7-8). Assuming that people will do what you ask just because they are supposed to is not motivation.

CAVEATS

Bad game design can be extremely unmotivating.  If you do not focus on what motivates people to play the game, the design could be boring, unengaging or uninspiring.
